Welcome to the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine

The UBC Department of Emergency Medicine was officially formed on May 1st, 2008 becoming Canada's fifth univeristy department of Emergency Medicine. This event represents a significant stride forward in academic Emergency Medicine in British Columbia as a common departmental vision will lead to a highly productive academic unit that will achieve international recognition. We have one of the strongest academic groups in the country and by advancing Emergency Medicine research and education, we intend to improve emergency care across British Columbia.
Emergency departments are the core of our trauma and disaster response systems, the interface between hospital and community, and the decision point for most acute hospitalizations. As the “safety net” for our health care system, they provide care for patients who face barriers to health care, including the uninsured and those with psychiatric and substance misuse problems. Emergency physicians have acute care, diagnostic, procedural and system management skills, as well as expertise in resuscitation, toxicology, prehospital care and acute pain management. These factors make the Emergency Department a vital setting for medical student and resident training.
Vision
Our vision is to create an internationally recognized academic program that:
- Provides outstanding innovative educational programs for medical students, residents, fellows, practicing physicians, and allied health care professionals.
- Generate high quality research in the areas of resuscitation, acute illness and injury, and new emergency care delivery models.
- Develops mechanisms of translating research and education into higher quality, evidence-based care for British Columbians.
